Cataract Formation

The lens of the eye is responsible for focusing light, much like the lens of a camera. When light enters the eye it passes through the lens and focuses on the lining of the back of the eye, known as the retina. The retina can be compared to the film in a camera. The retina sends the image information to the brain by way of the optic nerve. A cataract is a clouding or loss at the perfect clarity of the eye’s natural lens. When the lens becomes cloudy, the light is blocked and scattered, and therefore the image that we see is blurred.

For most people, cataracts are the natural result of aging. Some babies, however, are born with cataracts. Eye injuries, certain medications such as steroids, and diseases such as diabetes and alcoholism can also cause cataracts. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among again adults.
